Hello,
Truthfully (it is said that people are more truthful on the internet than anywhere else), I am not sure why I am here or even if I would fit in here; I just saw the promotion on my Reading Page and decided to give this thing a go…
Online, I go by Astrid; I respond to that name IRL too, so…
I am in my mid-twenties and have been writing fiction for leisure for about a decade now. I joined my first forum-based RPG about six years ago and have gone off to co-create and moderate multiple other RPGs. I gave up role-playing (as a member) very recently because of how it has seemed to degenerate into some stupid outlet for romantic/sexual fantasies (where every character MUST hook up with another character) and unhappiness with the way the game I was in was run. My writing partner and I closed our RPG board a year ago because our careers were on the fast track and we did not have sufficient time to devote to the many strains of maintaining a board – which was unfair to the members and ourselves.
If you ask anyone who has seen me write or is privy to my writing blog, they will tell you that writing is serious business to me. I have never met anyone who took it with more seriousness than I do (it’s a personality thing). I gain immense pleasure doing it but I also slog my guts out doing it. I am downright obsessive when it comes to my characters. I am also a well-known grammar and spelling Hitler.
Well, all that must sound absolutely appetizing, eh?
I write about a lot of things but my favourite writings revolve around speculative/science-fiction and fantasy environments. All my writings are character driven.
Otherwise, I presume this introduction has gone on long enough and I shall just go toss my main character into the rule-less mix! (And, I have always been such a terrible go-by-the-book person!)
Hola and see you around (hopefully)! :D

Date: 2009-10-16 04:37 am (UTC)And the degree of truthfulness on the internet varies wildly. It depends on things like if they are going anonymous or not, but if anonymous people have norms they conform to. :< And some people make elaborate fake identities online. I've done that before. :D

Date: 2009-10-16 02:20 pm (UTC)YES, this. Sometimes it's nice to have romance between characters, but unless it's agreed upon beforehand by both (or all, or whoever is involved) players, there's no need for every minute detail to be about sex and angst over lacking it. That just gets repetitive!
There's nothing wrong with being a spelling and grammar Hitler, I suppose, unless you're just in it to rip out the tripes of people who make mistakes. XD Having perfect spelling and grammar make posts more believable, and like you mentioned, being serious about your writing makes people take you more seriously. I definitely empathize!

Date: 2009-10-16 08:12 pm (UTC)But yes I know the feeling, when it comes to people trying to hook up characters just for that reason. But such is the interwebs, sometimes you get good content and sometimes you want to take a huge 2x4 and smash someones brains out for their stupidity.
Anyway I hope to have fun with you in the future!

Date: 2009-10-17 12:52 pm (UTC)Also, the higher up you are on the hierarchy, the better I expect you to write. Which doesn't work, I discovered, because life appears to work by popularity and not by merit. :x
Oh, and if you want to write, at least get the basics down!!! I have always been tremendously irritated by someone who kept spelling "yell" and "jell" (yes, I understand European countries might pronounce Y and J, but... English, please) and "trust" and "thrust" (which put all sort of naughty thoughts in my polluted little head).
LOL... This is such a rant. I apologise.

Date: 2009-10-18 01:55 am (UTC)Oh, hierarchy. It's frustrating when people dwell in a highschool clique mode even when they're long past that age. I've had a couple of rotten experiences joining a board ruled by popular tyrants. XP They're no fun if you really just want to play and aren't interested in the politics!
There's a girl in one of the forums that I frequent who constantly spells 'hiatus' as 'haitus'... and that's just one in an extremely long list of misspellings. I goggle at her websites, where every sentence has one or two errors. And she wants to write novels for a living! I feel sorry for her editor in the future. XD
So... in short, yeah, I totally hear you about wanting to see the basics down. Or at the very least, just use spellcheck if you're making a large post to try to mop up the mistakes. 9.9
